A day in the sun, toes in the sand, beach umbrella not unlike the one in the drink beside me. Hand in hand with my precious bride, the salty breeze drowned out the sounds of children laughing, and the party crowd loaded for bear. Breathe in, breathe out. No hustle, no bustle, no tussle, no muscle. Breathe in, breathe out.
Warm air on my face and cool water on my feet chased the storm clouds between my ears out to sea like the waves pulling back from the shore. A chance to pause, to recover, to dream, all brought to you by the Hand of the Almighty who molded, made, and restores my soul.
In the midst of this Chamber of Commerce postcard, the wind picked up as a shadow appeared among the white cotton-candy clouds sauntering by. In the distance, the darkness spilled to the horizon as it had opened it’s floodgates. As the storm cloud grew, it was apparent we sat in its path. Beach goers scurried to gather children and belongings to head for shelter as a brave few (or foolish, I’m not quite sure) stayed entrenched in our places, as if challenging the inevitable shower. Swimsuits, towels, and questionable umbrellas faced the storm but what is a day at the beach without getting a little wet? Rain washed away footprints and half-built sandcastles as we laughed at the absurdity of it all. Just like that, the showers passed, the sun re-emerged, and children ran to the waves as if nothing had happened.
In days past, I would have rushed to make sure everything was covered, everyone protected and worried that it was not enough. But today, I laughed in the rain. I embraced a kinship with the other “loonies” that held fast, enjoying the irony of a little rain shower against the backdrop of the expansive ocean beyond.
Today, I laughed in the rain.
